Experimental and numerical investigation of the damage characteristics of a ship side plate laterally punched by a scaled raked bow indenter

Experimental and numerical simulation studies are conducted on a scaled ship side-shell quasi-statically punched at the mid-span by raked bow indenter to investigate its damage characteristics from deformation large opening. A stiffened panel designed in model tests. Numerical is performed simulate indentation responses. The experimental results compared well terms of resistance-penetration curves, final shapes especially three failure models, i.e., initial fracture, “I” crack “III” crack. In addition, whole process, energy dissipation specimen related parameters specific failed elements corresponding models analyzed through simulation. demonstrate that dissipated stiffener frictional effect substantial during propagation process. shell involved with prior fracture mainly subjected tension bending effects, as cannot satisfactorily transverse shear effect.
